The Vice-Chancellor of Sam Maris University, Supare-Akoko, Ondo State, Francis Gbore, has described nurses as critical stakeholders in the healthcare sector, noting that their contributions to humanity and quality healthcare delivery remain invaluable.

Prof. Gbore made the remarks during activities marking the 2026 Nurses’ Week celebration held at the University Auditorium.

The one-day event featured practical exhibitions by nursing students, who demonstrated skills acquired through training and professional mentorship.

According to the Vice-Chancellor, nurses often serve as the first point of contact for patients and remain constant companions through periods of pain, recovery and healing.

He noted that the nursing profession is founded on compassion, sacrifice, patience, professionalism and commitment to human wellbeing.

“Nurses work tirelessly, often under challenging conditions, to ensure that lives are saved, hope is restored and quality healthcare services are delivered to the people,” he said.

Prof. Gbore further observed that the importance of nurses became even more evident during global health emergencies, when healthcare professionals courageously served on the frontline.

He commended healthcare personnel within and outside the University community for their dedication and selfless service.

He also appreciated the resource person at the event, Mrs M.M. Akinleye, Head of Nursing Services at the Adekunle Ajasin University Health Centre, for sharing her wealth of experience in healthcare delivery and health awareness advocacy with the students.

The Vice-Chancellor also praised the organisers of the programme, including Miss Hope Francis, a corps member, Mr Daniel Akomolafe and leaders of the nursing students for their initiative and successful coordination of the event.

In her remarks, Mrs Akinleye applauded the impressive performance of the nursing students during the practical exhibitions and encouraged them to remain committed to professionalism and excellence in healthcare delivery.

Also delivering the closing remarks, the Registrar of the institution, David Daramola, commended the students for their commitment and urged them to imbibe the culture and ethos of the nursing profession, remain focused and leave no stone unturned in their academic pursuits.

Highlights of the celebration included vital signs checks, interactive sessions, dance drama presentations and competitions involving staff and students of the University.
